There's really no reason to be scared. The more you convince yourself it's going to hurt and might get infected and haow bad the gun is, the worse the experience will be. Any way, here's the answer to your questions.
How painful? : It is more painful than your basic ear piercing, since that part is soft skin, but your cartilage is hard skin, but it only hurts real bad for a second or two, and then the pain just goes away. Don't worry about the pain, it only hurts really bad for a few seconds. Then after a day, its only sore when you touch it.
Is using the gun bad? : It's the same gun they use on your earlobes, it isn't bad. Just make sure you go someplace that uses a sterile needle, so you dont get any infections from it.
Studs or hoops? : I would start out with studs, since the hoops could be bothersome, they could catch on your hair and pull, and that wouldn't feel very good. But if you really want a hoop, go for it.
How long do they take to heal? : It can actually take any where from four months to a whole year before your cartilage heals and you can leave you earrings out. If you do want to change it during that time, you can, just very very carefully, and wait until it has been more than 4 months.
Also, I would recommend buying some H2Ocean at HotTopic, it is a better piercing cleaner than the one sold at Claire's. The chemicals in Claire's cleaner is effective in cleaning, but can cause excess scar tissue in your piercing.

Cartilage takes a bit longer to heal and is quite painful, it's like a burning sensation that doesn't go away. Expect it to hurt for about 2-3weeks and take about 8-12 to heal.
Hoops are alot easier to keep the piercing clean, be gentle, yet turn the hoop a little to clean, be careful agian, it will be painful. Where ever you get it pierced, shop, ask them, they should assist you with all the info and cleaning products, or they aren't worth doing it for you. Guns are quick, I got my ear lobe done with a 8 guage needle. WOW! Cartilage will hurt more. Cleanliness is your friend.

I've had mine done for about 5 years now. I wear a small hoop in it that conforms to my ear. It doesn't hurt to have it pierced, it's just like getting your ears pierced except the cartilage is a bit thicker. I must tell you though, it hurts for me to sleep on the side that it's pierced on even after all these years. I love having it...but it will be sore if you sleep on it. Good Luck!

Well I got my ears pierced there too but not my cartilage ;p. To me I think it woud hurt because if you feel your cartilage it's quite sensitive and feels harder than your earlobe which just kinda dangles there. And when you first pierce it you should ask for a larger diamond stud at first--advice from my own experience x] ; and you can change it after it's healed.

I don't think Claire's does it anymore, but as long as you really stick to the healing instructions you should be okay. If you don't think you can then it won't be worth your time, it will get infected and can possibly turn into a keloid (a bump on the piercing spot.)

claires does a horrible job if you have sensitive ears, plus i dont think you should even get your cartilage done because it is VERY unnattractive
