Almost all deaths are sad times. I don't think you'll be able to come to a consensus on who's passing was saddest. You could probably determine who was missed by the most people but the saddest death is probably the death of a child, especially one who is not sick. Children who are murdered or hit by cars are the saddest of deaths.

Celebrities are not the saddest of passings.

Of the "famous" people who died this year Syd Barrett is the saddest to me because he helped found Pink Floyd, the second greatest rock band of all time, and then his drugs led him down a path where he was just a mindless husk.
