Have had a 150 gallon salt and a 75 gallon fresh tank for years. It seems like the few times I have got a fish from PetCo...their fish wiped out my tank. Has this happened to you? Best Story gets Best answer!

I don't have this problem because I do not buy from PetCo. The one by me never takes care of their fish and never cleans their tanks, so I don't shop there.

But I have gotten fish from other places that turned out to be diseased, but I always put new fish in a rubbermaid container with a filter for 3-4 weeks to make sure they have no diseases. That way if they are sick, I don't lose all the fish in the tank.

It hasn't happened to me, but I don't buy from Petco very often, and I am loyal to my privately owned LFS, so I never buy fish from Petco. Make sure that you are not adding the tank water from the store to your tank. Use a net to transfer the fish to your tank.

YES! Totally has just happened! I bought my daughter two frogs for her tank, they were dead by the next morning. Checked everything, water is PERFECT! Temp is perfect, no other changes. Next day, two fish die, and the next day two more, and so on. Fish she had for years through moves and upping the size of her tank, all died within a few days. Checked everything out. After talking to everyone I know...the answer was clear...PETCO!

Yeah, I have tropical fish, but always bring home either diseases or snails that desimate my plants.
Now I tell everyone who will listen that it's so much better to go to a specialty fish store. You pay a little more, but the fish are healthy and don't cause more problems than they are worth.

Don't buy fish from the big stores like that. They will always die. Find a locally owned aquarium shop where they know how to keep fish.
