It provides a forum and a model for democracy for the common interests of the world. One could argue that it is toothless and impotent, but at least the countries with conflict have a way of communicating. The alternative is the old way of solving conflict; to shoot first and ask questions later.

Sure the UN could be better, but only at the expense of natiuonal sovereignty. It is hard for the little countries to be able to dictate to the larger, especially when the idealogies are different. But at least there is a way of expressing the wish.

The enforcement of UN Peacekeepers are a fair way of hasving foreign troops impose peace without it appearing to be a single nation dictating policy.

In my opinion, the larger countries in the security council may wield too much authority to the others and that may be an issue to resolve...otherwise, it is a rational organization.

The UN are the "peacekeepers" of the world. They are made up of many countries of the world including the US and Britain. In my opinion they were more effective in the past than they are now. Mostly they just advise countries about how they feel the country should behave. The UN didn't want the US to go into Iraq but we did anyway.

It is a forum for China and Russia to frustrate any international efforts at peacemaking and non-proliferation. It is also a forum for little tin pot dictators, Arab autocracies, European demagogues and anti-semites to attack the US and Israel. It allows the worst human rights abusers in the world to pose as champions of human rights by being on the Human Rights Council, or whatever it is now called.

Other than that, it offers some helpful humanitarian programs, but its economic programs are generally either a waste or counter-productive.

Oh, and it is also a black hole for a lot of American tax dollars.

Its overall impact since its inception has been decidedly negative.

The UN was created as a babysitter for isreal after world war 2. The whole purpose was to maintain the Jewish peoples safety until they could make it back to their homelands in a protected matter as well to try and convict war criminals for their heinous acts against humanity. Nowadays, The UN "promotes international cooperation to achieve peace and security"
