Students test the substitute to see what they can get away with. Sometimes, if the Substitute goes into the classroom and tries to be Mr/Mrs Nice Person, the kids run right over the top of them. This also includes the kindergarten kids not just the older kids. The Substitute doesn't have the advantage of knowing the students names most of the time. If the Teacher leaves A LOT of work for them to do, it usually helps the Substitute out a lot.
If the school is in a real bind, they will call who ever they can get to fill in for a Teacher who has called in sick. The Substitute in a lot of cases, doesn't know a lot about the subject.
Often times a person who has agreed to sub. for the high school and gets sent to the elementary school or maybe they agreed to sub for the elementary and gets sent to the high school.
I have respect for someone who is willing to try the Substitute job. But it is a very difficult job.
And just one more note. Not every school district trains their substitute teachers.

I used to be one. I was a substitute teacher for elementary school. I actually did care about the students. And at first I really believed a public school education was important. Then I worked within the system and realized what a joke it is. You think substitute teachers are boring? Take a look at the actual teachers. In some cases I worked as an aide so I was there with the teacher and I couldn't believe the teachers who would put on videos or have the kids play bingo while they sat behind their desk reading the newspaper. Many of the teachers were mean. I saw a second a grade teacher make her kids miss more than half their lunch time because they didn't walk down the hall in a perfectly straight line. They were quiet and not goofing off at all but their line wasn't totally straight. So, they had to go back and sit in the classroom. I ended up quitting because there was no teaching going on and very little learning. I now homeschool both of my kids. The public school system is such a joke.

I was a substitute teacher after I got laid off due to declining enrollment in the district where I taught vocal music. Substituting is no walk in the park! I had a routine where I kind of freaked the kids out in the first five minutes (in a comic, not a scary way) so they were quiet enough to wait and see what would happen next. I was one of the few subs who would go to the high school and to the classes for kids with impairments. I drew the line at gym, though--not even when they begged could they get me to take a gym class!

Don't do this, but, a long time ago, when I was in high school, we had this substitute teacher and the boys hung her out the window and held on to her legs. We were on the first floor, so she didn't get hurt, but man did we ever get in trouble for that one. The whole class had to run stairs in the gym, excepting the snitch that went and told the principal, that is!

It doesn't make a difference to me. I would treat my substitute the same as my teachers.

If there is no substitute ... there is no teacher. Kids need to learn.
