because for some people it is hard to rationalize what BASIC needs are. they might think that it is nessecary to be entertained or to have the top of the line. another example would be people with OCD or (obsesive compulsive disorder). they have a difficult time doing things that we would find normal or even things that we dont pay attention doing. like some people with OCD have problems going out of a room without leaving in the perfect way. there is an example of this on the comedy hospital TV show "Scrubs". some of these people may feel that they have the need to have a lot of stuff so that things look right or so they always have something to do and arent wasting their time.
you see the human mind is a complex web of needs and desires. but since we are not evolved enough yet we still have a hard time determining what is a need and what is a desire. for our fragile minds it is very easy to confuse one for the other and feel that we need something that we really just want.
but some people know that things are just what they want and still try to obtain the extra material possesions. these things could be driven by other emotions like greed or lust. yes lust. people dont really think about it but we are constantly trying to impress the opposite sex. and some people may feel insignificant and want to impress the opposite sex by having many big expensive things.

Abraham Maslow talks about this. Something to do with the seven stages towards human fulfillment.
Basically because there is more to our make up than just surviving. Human beings also have an inherent drive to live the most productive life possible. Not just to eat and make babies, but to create a livelihood that enables us to be as healthy, intelligent, safe, secure and happy as possible. Which makes sense, because the more of those things we have, the more easily we can survive.

It's for the same reason that, as you grow into responsible adulthood, you get tired of living "paycheck to paycheck" and hope to save some "for a rainy day", and to be able to deal with emergencies as they arrive in life, and they DO arrive. And it is nicer to live in comfort and financial security than "paycheck to paycheck" where you can become another "homeless" person when you fail to keep up with the treadmill. Trust me on this one. I've been in the "paycheck to paycheck" lifestyle. Now I'm not. It's much nicer here than there, for me and my family. God Bless you.

maybe its because as humans we needed desire to keep us alive, drive for food, water, and shelter, so maybe now that thats a given for many the want has to be satisifed with other material things. maybe its out of boredom? or maybe people are just afraid to look at what they really have in front of them so they have to clutter it with whatever else they can find. i like your question even though i don't have an answer.

i would like an answer to that question too! has our society become too greedy? too self-absorbed? too commercial? have we lost sight of the simple things?
i suppose it's different strokes for different folks: some may seek more because of ego, some for personal satisfaction, maybe one is just a work a holic and cant stop achieving. who knows? :)

because we are built that way... why does capitalism seem to work so well? because we are not monkeys... our brains are these immensely complex idea factories ... we are too smart for our own good.
And because I need to provide for my family now and well into the future... I do not know when that future will end, or what I'll eventually have 'needed' along the way.
