That's what we heard about al Zarqawi, and it didn't happen.

I think what intelligence analysts feared when Abu Musab Al-Zarkawi was killed was a backlash against the United States and other western nations from his fellow terrorists. But in the case of Saddam Hussein, the reaction could come from a sizeable segment of the Iraqi population, already involved in the current sectarian warfare. Saddam was a member of the Sunni sect of Islam. It is a minority in Iraq but, under his rule, its members dominated the Iraqi government and military. Now that Saddam is no longer in power, the Sunnis feel threatened by the dominant Shias, fearing they are taking or will eventually take their revenge for years of oppression. Now that their former leader has been executed, many fear the Sunnis will step up their attacks on Shia Muslims and the rather fragile central government, blaming them for his death. We must also not forget that Sunnis are in the majority in most other Muslim nations around the world, including Saudi Arabia. Violent uprisings in these countries might make it hard for them to show any support for the U.S. led war on terrorism, never mind keep our oil flowing. And it must be remembered that Osama bin Laden is a Sunni. While he may not be able to directly organize terrorist attacks from wherever he's hiding, a statement from him could be enough to cause associated terrorist groups around the world to launch attacks on western targets.
