Because the continent is North America. America, without the qualifier, refers to the country. There are two continents in the western hemisphere: North America, and South America. (You missed Australia, and Oceania is not a continent.)

There are several different systems of classifying the continents and the most widely accepted is that South and North America are two separate continents. However, people sometimes colloquially refer to the United States of America (a country), as simply America.

The United States of America is part of North America which
is a continent. But America by itself is not considered a
continent. Canada and Mexico are also included in the North American continent.

Actually The AmericaS-notice the S, are two usually classified as two seperate continents; North and South. However, the term AMERICAN usually refers to the United States and not some other country. (Try finding a Brazilian saying they are American). Think about it, what else is there? A United stateser? So the term American, and America is one country, the Americas (notice its plural) are two seperate continents.

Because it's only part of a continent, not the whole. Canada and America make up North America. One of two Americas.

The word "America" is used for two synomymic purposes.
In one sense, it means the continents of North America and South America (Central America is divided between the two at the Isthmus of Panama).
The other usage is for the country known as the United States of America, the only nation on the continent to use "America" in its name.
