I beleive there are two ways to view it. On one hand lobbyists and PACs can be seen to be perpetuating a system where the elite have access to the government and wield that power in such a way as to maintain the status quo. The legislature responds to the people with the biggest pocketbooks and lobbyists just keep making it happen.

On the other hand lobbyists can be a seen as a way pf providing access to legislature that the avergae person would never get on his or her own. The avergae teacher for example, has no more influence in government than the next guy. A teacher who complains to his or her congressman about say,low pay, will get very little accomplished. However a lobbying group of a million teachers writing many letters to many congressmen, backed by a lobbying group who knows the ins and outs of politics will have a far better chance of success.

I hope this helps. Government isnt my specialty.

Only if the process is taken to excess. Lobbyists can perform a valuable function providing legislators with a particular view of an issue.

Put it this way. If all those lobbyists weren't hanging around in the lobby, accosting politicians, then those pollies might be able to get into the chamber and vote.

I'm sorry, I have a simplistic understanding of politics.

No there's not a damn thing wrong with them. Unless of course they are lobbying for things like smoking and other bad things. They are a natural part of it. No harm in lobbying.
