IF you are indeed Goth, then you do not need people here to tell you what makes you Goth. If you do, then you're not a real Goth, just a poser.

Being Goth has nothing to do with worshipping the Devil as one person put it (and I am sure many more will). The main idea of the Goth culture is the freedom and acceptance of your individuality.

The Goths were originally a Germanic tribe in the 3rd and 4th Century who played an important role in the fall of the Roman Empire.

Goth and Gothic was considered a style or art and achitecture. Many of the world's largest cathedrals, such as Notre Dame was built in the Goth style and during this time, Christianity focused on the Virgin Mother so the style was far from being a product of the anti-christ.

Today the term is used as a designation for a youth subculture that originated in the 1970's in the United Kingdom. I am not really sure why the name Goth was giving to the subculture but if I had to take a guess I would say that the name was borrowed from the art and architecture that was prevelant during the Gothic Era in the late Middle Ages of Europe. Gothic imagry of today bares a striking resemblance to the Gargoyles and the macbre of the Middle Ages.

What makes you goth....that's up to you and how you feel, but most people associate Goth with the subculture, music, fashion and lifestyle.

The goth subculture is a contemporary subculture prevalent in many countries....it started in the UK during the late 1970s to early 1980s in the gothic rock scene, an offshoot of the post-punk genre.

Its imagery and cultural proclivities indicate influences from 19th century Gothic literature, mainly through horror movies.

The goth subculture has associated gothic tastes in music and fashion. Gothic music encompasses a number of different styles. Common to all is a tendency towards a “dark” sound and outlook.

Styles of dress within the subculture range from death rock, punk, androgynous, and some Renaissance and Victorian style clothes, or combinations of the above.

Usually goth is associated with black attire, makeup and hair.

Goth is more a lifestyle or outlook on life than anything. They tend to accept that there are bad things as well as good things in life, rather than 'sweep them under the rug', to say, and pretend they don't exist. They can dress however they want, although many prefer darker colors and more dramatic clothes and makeup, and listen to lots of songs and varied genres of music, which can include but are by no means limited to, new wave, darkwave, ethereal, Celtic, goth rock, punk, postpunk, chants, heavy metal, industrial, Latin, et cetera. Not all are interested in vampires - in fact, relatively few are. Many if not most have good relationships with their parents. Very few have mental or psychological problems. Most are actually quite nice, if a bit saturnine. Very, very, very few are 'satanists' or 'devil worsippers'. Most of the young teenagers who listen to Marilyn Manson, Disturbed, Slipknot, Korn, My Chemical Romance, Drowning Pool, et cetera and wear heavy thick makeup and studded spike collars and bracelets are called 'Mall goths', shop mostly at Hot Topic, and - this is important - they're not real goths. They just seem to think they are. They act disturbed and surly and try to impress/intimidate people. It seldom works, as most are obviously pathetic, and almost all will (thankfully) grow out of it. Well, one isn't "goth", "punk", or anything else by what they wear, the type of music they listen to, or anything else. It's more a state of mind. Basically, I consider "goth" to be just another category for people to be stereotyped in. Wearing black and listening to metal doesn't make you goth.

the clothes you wear, how you do your makeup, how you do your hair, how you present yourself to others. being goth is definetly not a bad thing. but you already know that if you truly are goth

There are so many subdivisions under the Goth heading that it is hard to say what the defining basic characteristics are. I'd have to say that a fixation on death would be one of the basics--along with the expression of that fixation in your mode of dress or self-expression. There are a million different ways to express an awareness of one's own death or Death in general; maybe it is part attitude and part outer manifestation of that attitude. Does this sound like you?
