get a metric ruler instead... :)

You can use this website to convert your english measurement (inches) to metric (mm).

http://www.convert-me.com/en/convert/length

56mm = 2.205 in which is a little less than 2 and 1/4 inches.

It doesn't convert exactly to 16ths, on your ruler it will be real close to 2 and 4/16ths (just slightly under). For most things you are measuring 2 and 1/4 would probably be close enough.

It is actually between 2 and 3/16ths and 2 and 4/16ths, but closer to 4/16ths.

If you have 32nds on your ruler it would be 2 and between 7 and 8 /32nds.

If you had 64ths on your ruler it would be real close to 2 and 13/64ths

Find out how many whole inches there are in 56 mm and then work with the remainder.

There's 25.4 mm/in.
