I think it is still important but not as much as a "guideline" or "obligation".. for example, it used to be, the girl lived with her parents until she was married and automatically lived with her new husband.. etc..etc.. nowadays common law marriage and habitual partners are a part of everyday life.. people still marry and want to get married but it seems as though the "need" to marry is not there as much.
