Okay I'm going to try explain this best I can. My parents have ADSL internet on their computer with a DSL modem. I have a laptop with an Agere Systems AC'97 Modem. I've plugged the internet cord into my laptop and set up the connection etc, but it won't connect. Is it because my modem is (possibly, I'm not sure) not a DSL one? And is it at all possible to connect to the internet on my laptop this way? Already tried wireless but we'd need to buy a new modem for my parents computer, so seeing if this will work. My laptop is an Acer Aspire 3004LMI and my parents computer a Parkard Bell if that helps at all. Thanks heaps!

OK, lets start by clearing the question. You have a DSL modem connected to your phone line and have purchased ADSL internet from a provider. Your parents have the ethernet cable from the DSL modem connected into the ethernet port on their computer and everything is working fine. Correct???

Now you want to disconnect thier computer and plug in your laptop.

Now for your info the cable does not plug into your laptops modem. It should plug into your ethernet port. Dial up modems have nothing to do with this type of connection.

Now assuming you connect the cable into your laptops ethernet port, you will now have to install what ever software your parents are using on thier compyter to connect to the internet service provider. Something that will let you put in a username and password.

If you purchased a wireless router it would be alot easier. Your parents computer would not need anything new. You would just plug the cable from thier computer into the router instead of the modem. You on the other hand would have to purchase a wireless adapter for your laptop, unless it has built in wireless.
