I live in a rental home that has ugly Avocado green counter tops and I would like to cover them as cheaply and as attractive as possible. Does anyone have any ideas for me? I need something that will last for a while. Thanks RG

Tile a piece of plywood cut to fit and put a piece of wood at the front and place on top of the countertop. Or use large pieces of glass which you can decorate on the underside with paint or plastic, also usful as a good cutting surface. Or get large sheets of aluminum cut to fit and bend at the front to cover the old bullnose countertop.

I agree get permission from your landlord. I just redid an old Formica top on a built in desk. First I roughed up the surface with scotch brite then I took brown paper lunch bags and glued them to the surface and then used wood stain with a poly top coat over the top. The effect comes out looking like leather.
This counter is in the kitchen or bath I assume. You can actually paint the counter top now. Use the paint they sell to repaint plastic lawn furniture. The only draw back is that it comes in very limited colors. Also if you paint be sure to clean the surface with TPS to remove all grease and dirt off.

Experience, Kiddo don't use ceramic tile on it unless the counter top is well supported. I tried that but didn't realize how heavy it was and warped the counter slightly causing the sink to pull away from it. So check your counter before you go for this option. If you have enough support, then you could go with some adhesive/caulk that comes in a tube and go for it. Best of Luck to you!

Actually, lacking the landlord's permission to re-do the countertop, you can cut a sheet of thin plywood or hardboard, the size to fit, and lay that on top without attaching it. You could even laminate it if you wanted. Then, come moving day, just take it with you. It might even fit somewhere in your next home!

It's quite easy to change just the laminate on the countertop. And relatively inexpensive... Most people think you have to change the whole counter but that's not true. And you won't believe the nice laminate you can buy.

Find yourself a carpenter and have him put the new one on. You can easily take off the old one yourself because it doesn't matter if you break it....

Happy decorating!

I agree ask your landlord first! But if he says okay then you could by Contact paper at any Wal-Mart or any store for that matter and use that- it comes in a lot of colors & patterns. Or maybe those peel and stick fllor tiles- you can buy a box of them for like $10 at any Dollar Store. Good Luck!

I used to live in some really bad rentals, I used self stick shelf liner. Very cheap, lasts long & comes in alot of colors & designs. Plus, when you move, you just peel it off. No need to ask permission to use this either.

First get approval from Landlord.

Try your Paint Store, or Art Store.
