First I hear 144.......then some other user on this forum proclaims it's "tens of thousands". Anyone got an official source free from the political rhetoric and spin?

He was convicted for direct involvement in the death of 144 people. Thus that is the only number of people officially attributed to him. Unofficially it was likely tens of thousands. one or one million, really doesn't matter, you can only kill Saddam once.

Thousands...They have still not recovered all the bodies, which were left to rot in mass graves.... Go to CNN.com and look it up or google it. I know it was thousands of Kurds alone, and there were others as well....Saddam was known as "The Butcher of Baghdad" He didn't get that nickname from being a serial killer...He tortured and killed THOUSANDS....

It depends on how you define 'kill' and on if you include all of the wars he started or simply the people that it can be proven his security forces murdered. It can be as little as 90,000 and as much as 1,300,000, though I have heard reasonably scientific counts that show the total might reach nearly 2,000,000, but I think that would probably include Iranians.
It is safe to say that he killed less than Stalin, Mao, Hitler or Pol Pot, but probably more than most of the mid-level mass-murderers.

He gased towns. He was on trial for one event, they didn't try him for everything. They can't try him since he is now dead, however he was in power since the 80's and did indeed kill a lot of people.
