I'm planning to buy one next year for college and I don't know which one to buy. I grew up with PCs and I am familar with Apples. I know i shouldn't base it on looks, but the applebooks look so cool and hip. But Macs are more expensive. I know macs dont really get virus but PCs do.

couple things to add:
I'm not going to major in anything with music ( i know Macs are good for that) and i'm not an intense gamer (for PCs). I'm planning to major in English or Journalism.

macs dont really needvirus protection. they are often concidered very good for college. but they are far more expensive and much much lower quality. you pay twice as much and get no options at all regarding key factors like processing. THE definitive best price is a compaq presario. excellent processing for about 600 bucks. in addition acceptable ram 80 gig hard drive very good computer.

Other than the looks the difference is the Operating System. Any computer that is connected to the Internet is vulnerable to get a virus, however the majority of computers are Windows based, so it makes for an easier target. The macbooks have hit that sweet spot where as before Macs were too expensive, but now they are very similar in price.

Hello rasberrylemongirl,

Get a Macintosh. The OS is easier to use, there's absolutely no computer viruses for the Macintosh yet. You can buy Microsoft Office for the Mac if you absolutely need to send your homework as Word documents, or you can use the many Macintosh programs that are out there. If you have the newer Intel-based Macs, you can use Bootcamp to boot your Mac into Windows, if you need to.

However, if you don't need Windows or Windows programs, why bother with it? You can do everything that you want just as good with the Macintosh and Macintosh programs.

It's just not a pretty package, but it offers a lot of great programs that simply work; no crashes, no viruses, no hassels. You can get onto the Internet quickly and easily.

Best of luck to you in your final decision though.

you are correct with the virus thing. Macs dont get as much viruses as PC's but that doesnt really mean anything.

Basically... PC's are cheaper and have lots of software to support them. Mac's are proprietary. This means that you wont have as much choice when trying to run programs and software.

I have been on computers for almost 20 years and still prefer PC's because of the flexibility. I can run many more programs on a PC than a MAC. The main thing is take the extra time to familiarize yourself with protecting your PC. Make sure you use a firewall (there is a built-in one with windows XP) and keep your computer clean. A well maintained PC can last forever (unless hardware fails.)

If you feel like paying a good chunk of change, get the best of both worlds: A Mac with an Intel processor and an extra copy of Windows. There's probably more that you would need to do this, but I'm pretty sure someone else can fill in the blanks. I don't want to screw up your future computer.

On the MAC.. you spend more money for the same hardware that just looks more appealing than the PC. But it is way too much expensive just for this.
The rest... is getting stuck on the mac when there is no compatibility between the PCs for some stuff. And there are more PCs in the world than MACs... so you decide.

Well it depends on what you need it for, macs are great computers that have all the latest and greatest features, for sure they're quite "hip" and are great for their simplicity, it is very fun and easy to use and comes with Apple's I-Life software to get you into the world of digital photos, music , videos and all kinds of media On top of that, macs are extremely common in recording musicians, as Garageband is amazing software. I've grown up with windows and yes, there often is little bugs and things that can screw up your system, but windows can be a little harder to get used to for applications, as for business apps, microsoft has office, which is amazing for word processing, spreadsheets, slide shows, and designing things, and to make it even better, there is Microsoft office for macs also, so its really quite a fair deal. Hope this helps.

macs are good for school work. they are very reliable and have good security. they also have microsoft office, which is great too.

pcs on the other hand are faster but not as reliable. they crash more often and have more viruses for them.

they are more compact.
