I used to have terrible handwriting and found for me the only way I could correct it was to slow down and print everything. I did that for a month and then stated slowly changing to handwriting by printing 1 paragraph then writing paragraph. over the next few months until my writing was both fast and neat. After that I never had a problem.
It takes some patience but it was worthwhile.
A couple of sites with some guidance.

Get you a good handwriting model and make it a habit to practice 15 minutes a day. Then, make it a policy to take a little more time to write anything more carefully that you are turning in to the teacher.
To succeed at this, you must be motivated and you must be willing to practice. Most sloppy handwriting is because we don't care enough to take a little more time and effort in the process of writing. I know. I'm guilty!!!

Use lined paper and practice a lot! Find an example of what you want your handwriting to look like and try to emulate the style. Write slowly until you get the flow of the writing you want to represent. After you have practiced awhile it will come naturally. Patience is the key word here - it won't happen overnight, but it will happen.

Slow down--being in a hurry is the most common cause of poor handwriting. Also, look at how you form the letters. Letters are a series of sticks, slant lines, circles, curves and arches. When you come to a point, like on a capital L, don't curve the point. Instead, make a habit of picking up your pencil at the point and starting the next line anew. When you make letters with circles, make full round circles, not ovals or egg shapes or half circles. Do not make letters from one long contiuous line. Letters are (like I said) lines and circles, etc. PUT TOGETHER. Even in cursive writing, being conscious of the letter shapes and angles, will make for better penmanship. Also, like every one else said, practice, practice, practice!

practice... one way of learning how to concentrate on the shape of letters is to practice writing upside down.
this will utelise the right (or creative) side of your brain and give you a whole new way of looking at handwriting as a creative expression.
also guidelines behind the paper may assist you in slope an size.
but in the long run... not many people eventually rely o neat handwriting...

My brother had the same problem. My problem was I was the only one who could really read his handwriting. My best advise is to tell you just to slow down and maybe even practice a little bit. Once my brother slowed down just a little his handwriting improved greatly - other people could actually read it.

Ask someone with good writing to write each letter, upper and lower case, printed and cursive, on a piece of paper.
Now what you need to do is practice. If you need to get the paper that the little kids use, or use 2 lines on regular paper. Hold your pen/pencil loosely (if you hold it tight your writing will be messier). Practice, Practice and more practice until you are happy with how you write.
It will take a lot of work, and a lot of dedication on your part, but you can do it....I promise.
