Or how to fix it? If I save a file to the desktop, 2 icons appear. I'm not sure if it's a problem with the profile or something else. I'm running XP on this PC. My laptop also has XP but I don't have the issue on that one.

This is a problem with your personal settings and the all users profile, they must be identical:
By default, this should be something like:
c:\documents and settings\allusers
but if this appears as:
c:\documents and settings\YOURUSERNAME
this would explain the situation...
what you need to do is a system restore back to a time before the double icons. You would go to start, all programs, accessories, system tools, and system restore, the directions there will lead you through it.

this is a new one. I've never heard of this. of course no one else will have a clue and blame it on a virus.
