Might I suggest that you consider MINORING in journalism and majoring in some subject with some meat. What are they going to teach you in journalism classes--how to write a lead, a bit of journalism ethics, maybe some interviewing techniques (if your lucky). The rest will be fill. Take the practical journalism courses as a minor and major in something like science, economics, sociology, or political science that will provide you with a body of knowledge that you can dip into when you have to write.

It depends on what type of degree you get. If you emphasize in print, you can always become an editor, copywriter, proofreader or something along those lines. If you focus on the broadcast aspect, you can go into production, photography, voice-over work to name a few options. I got my degree in broadcast journalism and worked as a reporter for 3 years before deciding the industry was not for me. I had a blast, but let me warn you - your starting pay will be very low, especially if you want to be a TV reporter. My first job out of college (in 2000) was as the 6 & 10 sports anchor at the NBC station in a small Texas town and I was paid $14,000 a year. So if you want to go into journalism, it's a lot of fun, but make sure you know what you are getting in to because a journalism degree really doesn't prepare you for any other field.

You might want to consider similar fields such as copy writing, writing white papers, travel writer, etc.
Fields that use the same skills - research, writing to capture interest, argument ... etc
Hope this helps.
