According to your perception of Christian teachings, Christian thology, and the Holy Bible, is it okay for people to be put to death for their crimes?

1) Only God can judge people
2) Thou shalt not murder (murder being the killing of someone with intent and premeditation)

What is Christian in your interpretation? Lutheran? Baptist, Catholic? etc., which Christians?
Jesus was a Jewish Rabbi (teacher) who taught the multitudes his philosophy and his interpretation of our father in heavens new laws, like a revised edition. And no he did not condone the capital punishment, and yes he did address it in his parables all the time.
Like Mary Magdellan? He did not believe she should be stoned. He did not want Barabas the murderer on that cross either, he took his place. And he took a liar and a thief with him. Death is a transition only G-D has the right to govern over and Catholic's believe that and enforce that as well, there is no death penalty in the country of Italy. I have one thing in common with the Catholic Church I believe that as well. We are not G-D's to give and take life for humans is wrong. We did not design this universe and we have no right to mess it up the way we have done. Remember we are only on a temporary existance here, like tenants, and any time mother nature could evict us with a little help from her friend G-D.

My own viewpoint is that we should not depend on something derived from ethics to decide ethical questions. Religions all are derived from the social and ethical nature of humanity, not the other way around. So no Christian teaching, no matter who the interpreter or leader, has any real trustworthy authority in any social issues. They will, however, pretend that they do.
I might add that the same thing can be said about Islam, Jewish, or even Buddhist or Hindu teachings.

Old testament teaching would condone the taking of a life for one that had been taken. New Testament would not condone nor condemn the act but teach that whatever you have done or may do is forgiven if one asks for the forgiveness because Jesus has already atoned for ALL sins and then when you have asked for forgiveness you are clean and you are to sin no more. Live a life as close to Christ as possible, knowing you are human and you will stumble but forgiveness is always possible. Jesus said he did not come to replace the Laws of Moses (Ten Commandments) but to add to them - Love thy neighbor as thyself.

Christ teaches not to harm others, but doesn't address this issue directly. There are portions of the bible that are used as references to condom capital punishment.

At the women's stoning he is reported as saying. "he who is without sin cast the first stone". Old testament references aren't as forgiving, but then they aren't strictly christian teachings.

Condones
The teaching is that you need to shed your blood to help pay for your shedding of innocent blood. So in actuality it is doing the murderer good to have his life taken. Kind of like restitution.
