The first built-in A/C that I can remember was in a 1949 OLDSMOBILE 98 with a "Rocket V-8 engine". The A/C was very visible with transparent cold air tubes from the trunk up the inside of the rear windshield. There was a large, heavy compressor bolted to the front of the engine, and a large evaporator, and condensor taking up a lot of trunk space. This unit did work fine, but it was awfully heavy and a bit noisy. That was 57 years ago. It was a dealer installed item, and not cheap in those West Texas days. Not many of those originals around any more.

the first car featured was a 1939 packard prototype @ the 40th national auto show in chicago il. but didn't become avaiable to public due to cost till decades later.

Dodge man is right it was the Caddy. The only way to shut it off was to remove the belt. Not too handy.
