I hope this doesnt sound dumb, but how do you know the difference between "REAL" contractions and braxton hicks? I have noticed lots of contractions and they come often, but they dont hurt. I assumed they were braxton hicks. However, I was informed by an OB nurse that at this stage in my pregnancy they shouldnt be braxton hicks. Despite the fact that they are frequent, they dont hurt. I was expecting something far worse then this. My question is when should I go to the hospital? I dont want to be one of those people who go in 50 million times for no reason! Did anyone go into labor and not really know? Is it possible for contractions to be really close together, and still not hurt? AM I GOING CRAZY???

They are probably Braxton Hicks, Labor is painful and it will be easy to tell the difference. Good Luck to you and Congrats on your new baby.

If you get to the point that you cant breathe through the pain then you need to get to the hospital. I was induced with my 1st and went into real labor with my 2nd and didnt realize it. By the time I made it to the hospital I was already a 3 and 30 min later a 6 by the time he was born I was only in labor for 3 hours. I had been timing my contractions and they still seemed not regular but when it got to the point that walking around and not able to really breathe through them I knew it was time. When it comes to that point you will know when it is time but in the mean time good luck and congratulations on your new addition. Plus if it is born before the New Year you will get that extra tax money

I wouldn't count on delivering your baby without some pain. For my second pregnancy I had braxton hicks during check-ups all the time and my dr. said I must be dialating before he even checked. The first hour contractions became painful they were more than 13 minutes apart. I had a 3 hour delivery start to finish . I would definitely count on some pain though.

You're not crazy. If you're sure you're 40 weeks, I would have the obgyn doc do a sonogram on the baby for safety. As I understand it, some people don't have as bad of a problem with labor and contractions as others. Respectfully, I would try to talk to your doc by phone to save having to pay for a doctor visit. Let the nurse know that it's an urgent conversation, not an emergency, and keep it short. At 40 weeks, and I'm not playing "diagnose the patient", I'd be inducing labor.

Some labor hurts and some may not be so bad. Time your contractions. Call your doctor and when in doubt, go to the hospital. Think about those people that have babies in cars and taxi...maybe they didn't realize that they were in labor

I could never really tell either. I was "lucky" in that my water broke, so that's a definite yes you're in labor sign. When my contractions were "real" they felt like menstrual cramps in my lower abdomen and lower back. They go away, then come back, then go away, etc. so that's when you start timing them. They will gradually get more intense. If there isn't any discomfort and they aren't at regular intervals, it's probably not time yet.

some women have labor contractions and don't even know it's real labor, maybe you should time them and see if there regular and nto infrequent, then call your dr
I am 33 weeks and have been having infrequent braxton hicks and they hurt like crazy, but I saw my dr yesterday and he said it was false labor...
Every woman tolerance for pain is diffrent ... I'm a wuss ...lol

yes it is possible....the real contractions should hurt like hell. they others are probably dilation. if they stay frequent and regular go and get checked. don't wanna be having baby in car when it is time to push when the contractions start hurting!! everyone is different.
