if I remember the book correctly - he did have a knife that he found among his parents effects, and when he began to study the books he found, he realized he was different from the apes. He saw pictures of other men in books who were clean shaven, and then he taught himself to shave using his knife.

the original book is actually quite good. Lots of interesting scenarios dealing with a man coming into his own.... and yes, he was a man when Jane came on the scene

edit: Actually now that I think of it (I read the book when I was about 15, so lots of years ago) - He found a razor among his fathers things. He taught himself to shave using the pictures he found among the books his father left.

For everyone's info - the book came way before the movies were ever conceived of.

I think the tabloids are lying to us. I'm sure he had a beard and lots of other body hair because he's been in the jungle since toddler age.

It doesn't really say when Jane met Tarzan... Maybe he was still a teenager and puberty had not hit him yet... I don't think he had any hair on his chest or legs either...

Absolutely true. I think, perhaps, he had one in the books. I've not read them, but I'm going to research this now. You've piqued my curiosity.
