Black powder is a mixture of saltpeter (potassium nitrate or, less frequently, sodium nitrate), charcoal and sulfur with a ratio (by weight) of approximately 15:3:2 respectively. The ratio has changed over the centuries of its use, and can be altered somewhat depending on the purpose of the powder.

Frankly I'm not interested in how careful you think you will be. Only professionally trained people should manufacture fireworks or other types of explosives. If you're trying to save money, then it's simply not worth the risk. If something should ever go wrong witth a commercial firework, you have a chance to claim against someone else. If it happens with one you've made yourself, who will you (or your family) claim against? You wouldn't make your own gasoline, so why something that is far more dangerous?
