The same way you get to know anyone. By spending time with them (with you!). So spend some time with yourself! Just you! Do things that you enjoy. Think, dream, plan, write, laugh. Have a conversation with yourself. Who do you think you are? Who do you want to be? Where did you come from? Where are you going? What makes you tick? Spend quality time in solitude. Take a walk in the woods. Listen to classical music. Write down your thoughts & dreams. Meditate. Have a bubble bath by candlelight. Read. Do some soul-searching. It's ironic how much time we spend getting to know others & how little effort we put into knowing ourselves!
Many people are afraid to know themselves. They will take great pains to avoid being alone & having to face themselves. They will overschedule their lives so that they're constantly busy & surrounded. They need constant companionship because solitude would mean thinking & discovering their true natures & it's easier to hide in other people and lose yourself. But you need some independence in your life. You need some quiet time to be still & find out who you are. Don't be afraid to take some time out just for you. If you don't, somehow you'll always feel lost. Always feel like something is missing.
Good luck in your journey toward self-knowledge!
You are the most important person you will ever know!

Self examination is a very tedious task...you are in for a "Socratic method".. which demands accurate definitions, good judgements and analysis.. objectively, asking more than one can answer.. and which left mind more confused than before.. but the basic tennet to obtain self knowledge... as the recognition of an individual of the need to do so,, of the basicity of the question.. so was the famed lined "know thyself" was Socrates was known for. As one starts to doubt is the catalyst in obtaining self knowledge... As Socrates would have put it.. that made him the wisest of Greek philosophers ...
"One thing only I know, and that is I know nothing."
If to adjunct to omniscience(unlimited knowledge) you cannot put a period on an extent of how far an individual would go...
to obtain knowing oneself.. importantly, familial or ecclesiastical values and acceptable societal morals that you hold importance cannot be disregarded.

Oh, this question...
The individual is cursed with ONLY the knowledge of Self.
The individual 'going-out' is no longer the individual but a part of the society... then there is 'group-mind'... tending to be influenced by group-thought as an individual would by self-thought.
I want to know this answer more than most...

walk the path - there is no shortcut in obtaining knowledge, but the cut that we take is not that long or hard. --- some of what quantum physics tells us gives a good scientific description of what "self" may be

By being honest with yourself. Lie to others if you must, but never lie to yourself. I've known a few people who actually believe the crap they dish out to others and when you hold the mirror of truth up for them to look into, they don't recognize who's staring back.

So easy just observe yourself at the moment of your selfishness. It means at the moment that you are greedy, pretending, angry, jealous, proud and many more selfish activities. What you observed about yourself are also the attitude of other people like you.

Compare yourself to others whom you admire, and try to emulate them. Catch yourself when you don't live up to your ideal, and try to correct yourself. Don't take yourself too seriously, be able to laugh a lot.
