Consciousness=The state of taking in new information via the senses... the sounds of a car or the letters on a page, the smell of your lover.
Unconcious= The inability to respon to stimuli, ie, the inability to absorb or process new information, often associated with a vegatative state, however, not true all the time.
A person who is awake but severely exhuasted may be concious on the outside, but does not notice thier surroundings or recall information, and may, for example, crash thier vehicle or get hit by one.
A person could be unable to move, and still be able to hear or percieve, this is call partial consciousness, and has happen during surgeries.
Subconcious=the process of information taken in during a consiouc state and making new connections... soemtimes results in dreams or illusions that are illogical or associates thoughts and feelings not previously recognized.

We are said to be unconscious (the opposite of conscious) when we're asleep. That's when the literal sub-conscious mind is in control and sights (dreams) are destorted and even sounds can confuse us. Therefore, consciousness must mean being awake when we're in logical state of reasoning, and awareness of the physical world.

Literally, it is the state of awareness of your surroundings.
In a more metaphysical sense, it is being aware of one's self, something that has long been considered uniquely human.
