Backache is sometimes the first stage of labour, place a warm hot water bottle on the painful area and give it a bit longer, a warm bath will also help. If pain gets no better consult your Dr or midwife . Good luck

I will tell you exactly what worked for us at 40 weeks 3 days also
A take away curry, a horror movie and then a bloody good ride before we went to sleep
Hey presto, 2 hours later off to the hospital and a boy born later that afternoon
At 40 +3 you'll be induced tomorrow anyway surely

I would agree with the walking,
warm baths to make you feel better,
Cleaning some people say that’s good keeps your mind on something else you then relax a little labour moves on

OMG! You must look like a Volkswagen Beetle, side on!
Have you had an ultrasound and other tests to find out what is causing this delay? If not, DO SO, like NOW, before any harm comes to you or your baby. RULE OUT any abnormality which might require a c-section, or a forceps-birth.
You may have a prob like my mum had with me, where my head was wedged against her pelvic girdle, and I was trying to come out shoulder-first (!). She was in labour for 22 hours before they anaesthetised her and used forceps to get me out.
If you've ruled out any complications like that, here's some folk-wisdom:
Walk around a LOT, with help as necessary. That's what my Nan would have done. Let gravity help you and the baby. Squatting and rising (with help, duh) is good, too.
Ginger tisanes, Vervaine, and other 'Mother's helper' tisanes are available from health food stores.
RELAX. The more wound up you are about the baby not coming out, the more you are clenching muscles that should be relaxed. This is a natural process, and being tense will NOT help. If you have done Lamaze breathing before, just do it, to help relax yourself.
SING. As loud and deeply as possible. The respiration will put pressure on your lower abdomen. My Auntie was walked about the house and garden, singing as much as she could do, by my Nan and my Mum, to get her first to emerge. For breaks, they held her while she squatted on her haunches.
Have SERIOUS sex, and LOTS of it. (That helps with the relaxation, too). Massage gently down your belly, while your partner/sister/friend massages firmly down your back. Doing this in a very warm (not hot) bath also works.
SNEEZE. You'd be amazed how many women start labour with a sneeze.
Get a mate or two 'round to yours, and LAUGH as much as possible. This is guaranteed to precipitate labour.
Take an enema or two, to clear your bowels. This will relieve discomfort. Don't use chemical laxatives, but psyllium or senna are ok.
These days, OB/Gyns induce labour with hormones as often as not, for everyone's convenience. Barring complications, I (personally) don't hold with that. It's safe and all, but... there are natural ways to accomplish the same thing.
Good luck. Come back and tell us how it worked out, please!

Hi.....Sounds to me like Labor is imminent, I dont think you will have to do much to get it started. If you have a birthing ball, try sitting and rocking back and forth on it, it will open the pelvis and ease baby downwards, the pressure could be all you need to get things going. Good luck and best wishes for an easy birth.

lower back pain is definitely a sign of labor. in fact, with my first, i never felt ANY contractions until after they broke my water (and I was having some strong ones according to the monitor). I only felt slight back pain which is why I went to the doc. in the first place. Good Luck! is this your second or third?

there's a few things: have sex (semen has a natural hormone that starts labour off), have a hot curry, have a hot bath, go for a walk. Good luck cos once they go over all they do is get bigger-my 2nd was 10 days late and was 10lb 10oz!
