Technological determinism. Its the fear and argument that humanity is allowing technology and science to come before ethics and morality. During the early Industrial Revolution people feared the march of progress and the dehumanizing of industry. The introduction of mechanization as well as the popularization of science caused a great deal of fear and anxiety. Franky represents that humanity as the Doc (science) uses technology to rob him of his humanity. On another level, the story argues that the knowledge of science is never greater than the wisdom morality.
