You need to write out years (150 years would be the most versatile, but 100 would probably do) on a long piece of paper, each year spaced 1 cm apart. You then place the measuring tape so that 1cm matches the year after you were born. every cm after that equals one year.

ex

START 1975 (birth year)
1 cm... 1976 (age 1)
2 cm... 1977 (age 2)
40 cm... 2015 (age 40)

You can start from any year and use it to work out which year people were born by going backwards too!

Take a tape measure and pull out the tape. Notice how the tape is contoured? Pull out 4 or 5 feet of tape to start with. Now bend the tape around in a loop. Rest the end of the tape on the contour part of the tape (the end of the tape rests on the numbered side up) this will make it easy to slide the tape up and down. Now slide the end of the tape until you reach 106" this will be the year 2006" (At 100" is equal to the year 2000) so 107" would be the year 2007 and 108" will be the year 2008 etc. etc. Once you line up the end of the tape with 106" as you look down the tape you will notice, for example if you were born in 2005 then you would be 1 year old, notice how the 1" mark lines up with 105" or if you were 12 years old how the 12" mark lines up with the 94" mark meaning that you were born in 1994 or say you are 37 years old then the 37" mark lines up with the 69" mark meaning you were born in 1969. etc.etc. Good luck and have fun...

Run the tape out to 106 (for the year 2006), holding the end in your hand along with the tape itself. Put the zero end of the tape at the 106 mark. If you are 45 like me, the 45 and the 61 will be side by side, as I was born in 61. Knowing the year of someones birth, you could put thre tape on any particular year (as in at the 93 mark for 1993, at the 78 mark for 1978, etc. and the birth year will be side by side with the person's age at that year. Pretty infantile, really. But pretty cool, at the same time.

Darryl and blacktrain got it. A trim carpenter showed me that a few weeks ago. It's kind silly, but interesting. But usually I just do the math in my head.
