how do I know when my ipod has completed the download from itunes/?

Your iPod should, when you first connect it, tell you not to dissconnect. That message should stay up until your iPod is finished updating, at which point you should get a display that reads update complete it is ok to dissconnect your iPod.

Itunes should tell you that its done downloading.
