I bought two baby Guinea pigs and let the Petco employer tell me all that was necessary. Now when I am home and reading about my two babies I see that they are strict vegetarians. But the food the employer gave me was pellets for Guinea pigs and a bag of Ferret food. She said to mix the two. Is that right? The Ferret food is full of non veggie items - I'm so confused...

Take the Ferret food back to the store and get a refund...

If they will not give you a refund (not store credit) then talk to the manager...

If the manager will not give you a refund... take the store credit.. use it to buy Guinea Pig food.. and as you leave, let them know that you will NOT be back.

You need to get the right food for your guineas because their body's need supplemented Vitamin C and roughage with additional fresh fruits and veggies. Bunnies and guineas are not the same but alfalfa pellets work with both and you can just give your baby's some oranges until you can find a guinea food. Also give them some toys to play with I found that cat toys(the plastic balls) that have a small bell in them work cause guineas figure out how much fun they are as soon as you give them one.

I have never heard of feeding them ferret food. They need Guinea pig food, it has more vit. C than rabbit food. They also like fresh fruit and veggies.
Take back the ferret food and ask to speak to the manager.

Yes, in my experience Petco employees are hit and miss on knowledge. Just feed the guinea pigs guinea pig pellets, fresh veggies, and occasionally some timothy hay or alfalfa.

take the Ferret food back.. the employee messed up...

they require Guinea Pig food with Vitamin C...

Ferret food is $$$ because of the meat content.. and isnt something you need.. if they refuse to take it back ask to speak to the manager..

pet stores are typically the WORST place to buy any kind of pets - they are in it for profit and will tell you anything to get a sale.. they support the cruel industry of breeding animals for profit ahead of care or genetics or anything else

Do not! I repeat DO NOT give them Ferret food, never buy an animal from Petco either seriously they suck. Here is some info you need to know:
-You should take new piggies to a small animal vet to make sure everything is good.
-They need wooden chew toys so that they can wear down there teeth, but Timothy hay is best since all piggies love them.
-Timothy hay is the only hay that is good for them.
-They need alot of vitamin C in there diet, since they cannot produce there own.
-They need a good size cage (www.cavycages.com)
-Don't worry if you see them eat there poop, its really gross but it's a good thing for them.
-When they hop around on all fours it's called popcorning, it's very cute to watch haha.
-Make sure you know if they are the same sexes or not(try a google search)
-They need fresh water every day.
-Carefresh is the best bedding for them, yes it's a bit more expensive but you do want the best for them right? Of course you do ^_^.
-They need Hay every day.
-Only have cages with plastic bottoms otherwise they can get painfull sores on the bottom of there feet called bumble feet.
-DO NOT LET THEM GO IN THOSE PLASTIC BALLS OR LET THEM GO ON WHEELS it hurts there spines and can cause painful injuries.
Fruits and Veggies that are good:
-Carrots
-Kale
-Romaine lettuce ONLY (no iceburg it gives them loose stool)
-Tomato
-Apple
-Bananna
-Grapes
If you need anymore help email me at:

AND PLEASE TAKE THEM TO THE VET to make sure they're healthy :).

I would not feed them the ferret food. I gave my guinea pig food specified for him. He also loved alfafa. Goodness, I hope you like squeaking animals.

Check and see what the "non-veggie" items are. Just because they aren't carrots and apples doesn't mean that they are animal-derived. Therefore, the food is quite possibly still vegetarian.
