Exercise helps enormously. Start with 30 minutes a day three times a week, and work up to about one hour about five times a week. If you can't do an hour together, break it up to 20-30 minutes in the morning, at lunch and in the evening.

It will be hard at first, because depression makes you unmotivated, but it will start working almost immediately.

that's only partially true. Sugar, caffeine, animal flesh, nicotine, drugs and alcohol can all make one more depressed. But the real reason why people are depressed is because they do not know who they are. They think they are this mind body ie; race, color, nationality, religion, job, senses, intellect, etc. Which we are not we are eternal spirit souls, part and parcel of the Supreme Soul, Also known as Krishna, Allah, Vishnu, Jehovah,. This world is not our real home it is called Maya(illusion) and is temporary and full of misery. The quickest way to get out of illusion and misery is to chant the Maha Mantra (the great mantra for deliverance from suffering and illusion) go to krishnaculture. for details read Bhagavad Gita As it is By Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada and know the true purpose of life and that will make one happy. also stephen-knapp. for e-book The Key to Real Happiness. This can only help. It helped me unlimitedly.

I'm sure a constant and healthy diet play a great role in mental health. I have also read that there is a certain chemical only found in nuts and fish that make one feel happy. Plenty of calcium will help out in the secretion of serotonin as well as chocolates.
