usually it's for the company to profile its customers for their own analysis to determine future marketing and customer service efforts.
however, a lot of companies also sell your info to other companies -- if you notice some of the questions in the warranty registration form are for "what you're into" (cars, gardening, travel, etc) and "when you're likely to buy something" (a car within the next 2-3 mos, etc). the company creates an aggregate profile based on your answers and sells your info to, say, a car dealership, which in turn uses that info to mail you offers.
this is why it's important to carefully read and check (or uncheck) the privacy preferences at the bottom (usually) of any warranty registration form.

It's for demographics. The company is using this information to market their products. They are figuring out what kind of people buy the products. Then once they figure that out its more cost effective for them to advertise with certain media types.

So they can put you in a box.
Once they know your age, income and education they flag you as being open to recieving certain kinds of mail advertising certain deals for people LIKE YOU.

They want to know who their target consumer is based upon specific data. Age, region, race, sex...and yes...income.

because they want to know if you sue them for them not honoring their warranty if you can affor a good lawyer or not.
