You'll find that there are mermaid legends from all over the world from the French Nisse (spelling) to the Native American forms (some of which if memory serves were said to be covered in fur).
There were also stories of fresh water mermaids who guarded treasures in small lakes and ponds.
If you want a good place to start for mermaid stories take a run through Carol Rose's work "Spirits Fairies Leprechauns And Goblins An Encyclopedia". There should be an indexed section about water spirits and such.
Cheers and good luck,

I don't beleive that mermaids exist, although the manatee probably did look like fat naked sea-women to drunk and horny sailors.
Given the mythology of mermaids, that their singing seduced sailors into running their ships into rocks and drowning themselves, I don't think they'd be very nice. The whole "Little Mermaid" thing is cute, but if mermaids were real I think they'd be pretty creepy and would probably be eating the sailors they killed.
Just think of it, beautiful from a distance but as you get closer you can see their creepy cold eyes and thier fangs and claws...
I have had an idea for an art piece along these lines that I've been toying with for years.

OF COURSE I BELIEVE IN THEM!!!!!!! AND I LOVE THEM 2!!!!!!!!!!!!! I did a powerpoint about them for a class project and I translated it for you, I hope it helps
There were two classes of sirens: the ancient ones and the most modern.
The sirens changed when they fought with the Muses, who were envying them for their voice.
Ulises's story tells that he made his sailors cover with wax the ears and he had to stick to the ship because if not, the sirens were going to sink him and his crew for hearing their voice. The sirens were the ones who sank in the sea forever.
There have been several reports of the people seeing sirens beginning November 3, 1523 and in these days next to “ Isle of Men “ they are seen commonly.
The majority of the visions made say that they see women with the long and dark hair. They tell that there are a half women of white complexion and half fish. It is said that they are small well (as of the size of three or four-year-old children). Their ears are usually very big.
Cristopher Columbus pointed in his diary, “ A crewman saw three mermaids, who rised hight out of the sea, but they were not so beautiful as they paint them, although to a certain extent they had a human appearance in the face. ”
There are several scientists who believe that we are related to the sirens and there is even a theory so-called “ aquatic theory of simians ”.

No. The mermaid myth came from sightings of an animal called a manatee, which actually doesn't REMOTELY resemble a human.

Well I ask that question to myself all the time and every time I ask other people they say that that's bull and that I'm crazy. But who has been in the bottom of the ocean to prove what's real. The ocean is huge. Pressure and temperature makes it impossible to explore the underworld. So I believe that they could exist. I like them too. I collect pictures of them.
