I would like to know why Barack Obama considers himself to be an African American? Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't his mother white?! I have no problem if he was black on both sides. However, he is 50% white!! To me that is like him forgetting his white roots. Please from now on, when you go out campaigning, do not forget your white side. After all, your mother was the one that took care of you. Say something more about your mother's side of the family. Good Luck in 2007!!

Most black people do have white blood in them. I hope he does not forget white roots. We did invent everything, so have much to be proud of. It's true we don't have white-history week etc...it's coming!

No one is 100 percent anything any more. And people whose parents came from diverse backgrounds will often identify themselves as belonging to one particular group.

And then of course, there is the experience factor. A person's genetic background might have only a small amount of a particular race in it. However, they may still look the way people expect people of that race to look. And they may have grown up around people of that race and experienced all the hardships, successes, culture, and religion of that particular group. This, perhaps more than genetics, can be the determining factor in how a person identifies them self.

I have no problem viewing Obama as an African American, and no problem with him identifying himself as such.

My mother was American Indian and my father Irish. What does that make me? It makes us all Americans.

Many children of mixed race parentage will identify themselves as belonging to one race or the other, usually the one they look the most like.
