Both. Sometimes they are born like that and other times they turn that way cause of some problem they had and want to try new things.

You know, so many people are on this kick about how people may have the feeling but if they don't act on it, then they're not gay. And being gay or a lesbian is not all about sex. You're not straight only when you're having sex, right? I have gone through long periods of celibacy and, frankly, now that I'm older and have some health issues, sex has become fairly low on my list. But I'm still a dyke! I know from what I am abstaining! It like if you're not eating chocolate - you know you're not abstaining from carrots!

Hey, how are you -- I like your screen name, I have an urge to start this "honored majesty, god of two kingdoms" -- but I will refrain myself *grin* -- it really is a cool screen name.

That said.

People are born gay (made in your parlance). I have no question of that for several reasons:

In a word, genetics. there is a great deal of scientific evidence that it is inborn. Beyond scientific evidence there is anecdotal evidence.

The fruit fly study is actually fairly conclusive. But the pheremonal and eye blink studies are also compelling. I've included links below for those that are interested. Beyond that, research increasingly suggests that at least for males, Xq28 is the crucial gene. I am saddened by this, because I believe that once it is proven, gay people will be wiped out through selective abortion – with the full support of the fundamentalists -- and I think that is sad, because given the number of species in which homosexuality exists (see Dr. Bruce Bagemihl's book "Biological Exuberance" from St. Martin's Press) I think it serves a purpose.

Beyond all of this, there is anecdotal evidence. I was never in my life interested in a female for anything beyond casual friendship. I don't get excited or erect from them and sex with an opposite sexed member seems disgusting to me. Bisexuals might and do feel differently, but for gay men -- that's pretty much what we feel. I knew I was attracted to males when I was 8, figured out it was sexual at 11 --- I didn't even know what homosexuals were when I figured out I was one. I don't think I had ever heard the word. I grew up in the country. The advantage of that was that none of my friends thought it was odd -- just Reyn, so to speak.

Kind regards,

Reynolds (Reyn)

PS Special note to Harrison -- no being gay is NOT action, it is what you are. My partner could be struck by a bus tomorrow and I might never take another lover. But if I lived another 50 years and never had sex with another male again, I would still be gay -- the same as a straight person who is widowed and never marries or has sex again is still straight.

Lots of straight men have gay sex at some time in their lives, it doesn't change any of them. I am very thankful I am what I am, and I am also glad that I've never been one to live under a rock.

Everyone has a choice in everything we do....So anyone Gay has choose to be Gay but like to say they were born that way.. They must feel guilty being Gay because they always blame it on how they were born...

People are born gay.
Some gay people may choose to lie to themselves about who they are attracted to (such as Ted Haggard) and some gay people may choose to remain closeted (such as Mark Foley) and some live open and honest lives. The only choice is being honest about being gay since it has been scientifically established that homosexuality is based on biological and genetic factors.

They're born gay. You can't choose to be gay. Take me for example... I've labeled myself as "gay" since I was in kindergarten. I wrote love notes to girls and played with the boys. I didn't choose to be gay. I was born this way.

That all depends on your definition of "made", really.

For the simple fact that I wasn't created and programmed like a machine, I cannot answer your question.

Besides, that question is really exclusive. What about Bis and Bi-Curiouses?

Born gay. Orientation is not something that can be chosen. Did you choose to be straight?
