I live in an apartment complex. If someone else (say my next door neighbor) flushes something down the toilet, can it show up floating in mine?

I don't think so...There is no pressure on the system. Plus, It would have to go up hill and through the S bend in the toilet. I guess stranger things have happened...

In the event of a city-wide severe flood, causing all the sewer systems to fill, then it'd be possible for the toilets to back up too. But in that case, the toilet would be underwater anyway, and it probably would be the least of your concerns. Let the landlord worry about that one. The S-trap in a toilet or sink only prevents gases from coming up. It doesn't prevent a backup. But yeah, all the sewers flow down, and not into each other like the two drains in a kitchen sink.

The odds against that are astronomical. The only possibility of that happening would be if the two pipes from your toilets connected at a "Y" not far from yours and the pipe was plugged between the "Y" and the drain exit from the building. Not very likely.

There is a "S" trap in your toilet to keep things from coming back up. Only water and a snake are the only things that could get back up threw that trap. So no the neighbors stuff will not show up in your toilet.

If the drain pipe below your apartment was plugged and there is no check valve, waste from a drain above you could possibly back up through your drains.
