No. The whole world would be blind and toothless.
Forgiving is a better virtue

Well, I think it would depend on whether people did the eye thing twice and the tooth thing, what is it, 26 times.
Then the world or at least the people in it would likely end up blind and toothless.
Shameless sarcasm I know. . .
but you assume that everyone is out there committing egregious offenses.
Or would you advocate redemption without repentance?
Everybody has to pay the piper in one way or another.
We call them laws. They get changed from time to time but we have to come to an agreement to do so.
It's a tough call don't you think?
Do we stop harsh punishments for crimes that are even more harsh?
Or do we take the time to raise our kids not to commit these crimes in the first place.
Drugs, violence, hate.
These things don't just happen.
There are very few true sociopaths and psychopaths out there.
These people didn't jump out of the womb with a clever and start hacking away.
Most of the people in prison fell or were pushed through the cracks somewhere along the line.
I am capable of compassion.
But I also feel that rapists (including pedophiles) and murderers (1st degree, 2nd degree(barring mitigating circumstances) should pay the ultimate price. How can someone ask for mercy when they themselves have granted none.
Do unto others . . .
is an equally valid passage . . .
and it cuts both ways.

Well... eventually the world would run out of teeth and eyes, and so people would all be stuck for what to do next, limbs maybe? Erm, no, I'd say it's not really a good solution as it merely results in endless battles, and as you (and Ghandi) say, an eye for an eye leaves the world blind.

Hello =)

No....not at all.....revenge is a fruitless venture.....

So is punishment....utter nonsense....

Justice has its merits, and so does removing dangerous people from society, but that's where the obligations of man end.

I did have an "eye-tooth" extracted once, however, and the experience was dreadful. All things considered, I think that if someone knocked out my other "eyetooth"..I might consider returning the favour.....LOL (just joking...)

Namaste, and Happy New Year,

Mahatma Gandhi had said 'if every one believes in "an eye for an eye", very soon leave the world blind '.... (something to that effect).

I stand corrected...

That is such a misquote - the rest of the scripture says something about that not being the way to solve problems. Everyone thinks God condones that eye for and eye stuff, but they don't read on.
And no, I do not believe in it.

No, I believe what goes around comes around. Live and let live, they will get whats coming to them somehow, somewhere. Its only a waste of my time and energy to plan and carry out revenges. I may forgive but I never forget. If I don't forget I can not be wronged again by that person.

The Judgment is negative, the Will is positive.

As you yourself have said, infinite negation would follow; not only because the other would lose, but to assume that negation would stop with that negation punishment has its contradiction in the totality of human history; the Judgment is negative and Judgment is not right in and of itself. The Will is positive.

That has got to be the stupidest form of thinking in the world, like if a person accidentally hurts you, then you have to accidentally hurt them?
This idea is completely stupid because you aren't any better then the one who caused you harm in the first place.

In a typical Biblical fashion, there is another conflicting passage which states to turn the other cheek.

which means to moon everyone.
