For all we know that's where we came from. Some say it's really a ship of some sort. Nice disguise too.(Star Wars) Supposedly some type of space station around 2018.

Actually, right now NASA has a mission plain to put a base on the moon close to the south polo (sun hits there almost all the time, we need that solar power, so they say) by the year 2020, from my understanding the purpose of this base is two fold, one to practices for mars, you know, soil samples, surface conditions etc......., as you know the mars rovers have been hard at work for over 6 moths now. The sec is as a launch point to mars, this is do to the fact that there is little to no gravity on the moon which makes lift off very easy. I can say very confidently that we will look up at the moon and in the next 20 years see man made light. I wish I could say this was scifi but it's not they really are planning this right now, You can get more info on this from NASA. The fact of the matter is that we the human race are growing in hordes of numbers and have to colonize other planets, The moon is just a stepping stone. I hope this helps.

We may establish a base this century, but I wouldn't call it a colony. I question that we will ever have what I would call a colony on the Moon. For me, a colony would have to be able to survive without help from Earth. I don't see that ever being true for any Moon base, no matter how advanced it is.

NASA is planning to return to the moon in 2020, and then build a permanent base on the moon 40 years after that. That puts it at 60 years away.

Colony? Not for a long, long time. You will be dead.
"Outpost"? NASA plans to have a lunar base by 2020 or so. Don't hold your breath.

Not probably for about 50 years or so.

The US might probably do it, but I figure it's gotten into far more trouble with the whole middle-east misadventures then it bargined for.

Once that's sucked our economy dry and we get responsible politicians who believe in education and science and stuff maybe we'll get back to the business of allocating actual money to such projects.

Every nation uses some of it's revenue for "miracle" projects - whether it's the Pyramids or Coloseum or a Sun-following statue of your fearless leader, we just need to spend less on the no-benefit actions of the present day and refocus on what has historically made this country great.

Not even close. There is no direction, no purpose at NASA right now. There is no more "space race" with the Soviet Union to motivate the US. I wish I was wrong about this, but I'm not. We don't even have a shuttle that could get us to the moon right now if we had to.
