I've heard of business casual and business formal and terms like that...but for a recent event, I inquired about the dress code and was told "nice business attire" is the way to go. What is that?!

jacket and tie, it is always better to be a little over-dressed than under-ressed.

I would guess they mean a suit & tie, or at least a coordinated sport jacket & pants with tie. You can always ditch the jacket and or the tie when you get there if others are more casual.

You can never go wrong with a dark suit jacket and tie. If you get to the shindig and see you are the only one in a tie, you can always take it off.

Suit with a tie. Not a bow tie! Just a regular tie.
