I saw both is concert. Lionel Richie was still with the Commodores then. He was great. However, Freddy Mercury had one of those voices that would make people stop in their tracks. He was an unbelievable singer and one of my very favorites.

Although I like them both, comparing the two is like comparing apples to oranges. Lionel Richie is more R&B where as Freddie Mercury/Queen was more geared towards rock. As far as technical ability, my vote would go with Freddie, hands down. Aside from the theatrics in his performances, his voice alone was pure magic, and even though he's gone, his music and legacy will live on forever.

Fred has the most unique voice. Nobody can even come close to sounding like him. His death was a great loss to the millions of fans.
