You can go there for a few days to check out the sights and all. However, you might want to stay in between Washington & Baltimore (near the Beltway) because if you want some good nightlife in the area, then you head north to Baltimore and the Inner Harbor.

I have been to D.C on three different occasions. I would say for me 2 days is sufficient. Unless you are an analyst or some professional working on a project you can cover most things you wanted to do such as the museums, monuments and culture of the city.

Doglover,
Regardless of how many days you decide...don't try and drive. I rented a car there and used it once in 5 days because driving is hectic. Just take the Metro or a taxi.
Oh, if you visit Georgetown, try out some of those Etheopian restaurants...they're great!

As many days as you can. There is so much to see and do. But, if you're not up for a lot of sightseeing then I would rethink my travel plans.

3 or 4 days is great !
You can do all the major sites in that time,
As soon as your know the dates, e-mail your Senator and/ or Congressperson and tell them you want White House Tour, and Senate and House Gallary passes.
