It means a very cold night. People used to let the dogs sleep in bed with them in order to stay warm on cold winter nights. "Looks like its going to be a three dog night" means that it is going to be very cold.

Okay already, you heard about fourteen times about the ---dogs to bed in very bad cold weather thing--------But-----no one to this point has pointed out that the band you're speaking of was formed at the absolute height of the Cold War and bands of that era were especially sensative to the world circumstance both in their personal lives as well as within their careers---- the name came as a reference to the Hard Cold that the world was experiencing with the Cold War !!!
