My English B.A. has led only to menial jobs, and, six years later, I know I am going to have to do something else if I ever want to own a home and save money for retirement. I am considering grad school, but would jump on any job paying $50,000 or more per year that I could train for in less time than grad school would take.
I will not do anything unethical or work excessive overtime, but am otherwise open. Give me any idea.

P.S. Some of the answers so far are good, but I'd like some specifics, please. For example, what programs are available that train a person for a software career in less time than it takes to get a Bachelor's or Master's degree? Can I have some names of institutions?

You can get trained for alot of computer jobs in less than a year... Things like graphic design, working with Macromedia Suite MX with web design.
Or... Things like administration, like Networking and things, people think it takes longer, but it doesn't. You would start out at like 40-50k, but in 4 years, you'd be up to like 80 working as a senior admin.
If you're willing to go 2 years at school, since you already have all of your pre-req's done because of your BA, you could be a Dental Hygienist, they start out at 35-40 an hour in most states, and more in other states on the west coast.
::
With no more schooling, you can be a professor at a community college with a BA, full time, with working a little extra at another school part-time, and make over 50k... Just some ideas... If you're going to do that, you can also work at public schools and make 35-40k, and work at a community college part time too..
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Additional Details (RE:) I would need to know which state you're in to tell you what schools offer it there, I know in michigan there is alot of them, and california too, what state are you in?

You could very well get into the computers.
Lol.
Graphic Design
Become a networking engineer...
You could easily get into software.
When you get into working with computers,
You can make lots and lots of money,
As long as you are willing to study and you are
dedicated to working your job.
Technology is the way of the future,
It always has been.
There will always be open positions and always will be great paying jobs. As the economy will fall, And people will lose their jobs, Computers and technology will always be needed.
Eh, It's just a suggestion... But there are many opportunities out there!

A BA degree is not a specialized degree. Usually a BS gets you further. If you took English maybe you should have gotten your teaching certificate, or even in library science, but English would lead you to things like seminars, and a speaking and writing career (books). I don't think you'd get a $50,000 job without a specialization, and that specialization would take two years, maybe more (depending on which you chose). Get a paralegal certificate. Even though it won't pay $50,000 (those $50,000 are in computers and sales like pharmaceutical sales or car sales) it would better than menial work.

Seriously, sales. Start training with a high tech company to sell their product. You can make some serious cash doing sales, if you're good at it. Read some books on selling.
We're not talking about an annoying telemarketer here, or door-to-door. We're talking about helping people solve problems with good products.

Your best bang-for-the buck will take two years, you can earn a nursing degree in a two year community college program and R.N.s make that kind of money soon after graduating. Otherwise, any other option risks going to jail.

Consider professional sales. More money is made by selling than anything else that I know. There is a good site here that has some sales info on it you may want to check out.
