the performance degrades, then stops totally. Then, I start getting "the page cannot be displayed" errors. The modem-activity icon slows down, then stops altogether. I have to reboot to get it to work again, every 15-30 minutes. I thought of reformatting but not sure that's any help... modem diagnostics say it's working ok. any ideas?

Hi

Since i dont know what type modem you have i have to gues. But in all , when slowdown like that happens it means that you are getting hit by a tcp/ip pack that is larger than the modem can handle , now sometimes this is cause because a virus or a hacker. So first run an scan , then , verify that you have the firewall setup so that you can keep track of the incoming and outgoing connection from your pc. Also , put the modem in its default options and reconfigure it. and last , re-install your networking card drivers . Please let me know

I will start out by saying I am assuming this is a cable modem. If that is the case then try using another computer on through it and see if the performance is the same. If the experience with the other computer is the same then I would get a new modem. If it is rented through the cable provider have them swap it out, or go down to the local computer store and pick one up. You may need to call your provider when you swap it out, because they may need to authenticate it.

Hope this helps...

Dial-up DSL or Broadband?

if you're using dial-up and sharing the phone line with your house phone then every time somebody calls you you can lose your connection

I suggest you upgrade to broadband

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
