I think everyone has, at one time or another, used shopping to cheer themselves up after a crappy day or something. I know I have. But I don't think I've used it to avoid a problem...I'm not exactly sure how that would work.

i think many people use shopping or consumerism to avoid personal issues. and i find it as just a way to cope with something that is bothering them. an example would be if a woman was to lose her boyfriend or whatever, she finds it as a way of coping. going to a mall buying something that will make her feel better about herself rather than to sit down and think about what is troubling her. i think that its perfectly healthy for one to experience this. but to a certain extent where it begins to make matters worse. such as shopping extensively, becoming in debt with credit cards and things like that.

Yes, I think so... In the words of Suze Orman.... You buy "more than"....when you feel "less than". I'm guilty, I'm sure.. When I feel down in the dumps I go buy myself something, or get a massage.... It's not a conscious decision, but I guess the underlying reason is that I feel bad about something. That's not always the case... but yes, I agree with your question.

i always use shopping as a way to forget about my problems. it`s bad, because in the future you could be in horrible debt with your credit card company&etc. but yeah. i do. it`s really sad actually .. you get all excited over your new clothes but after a while you become so used to it that you forget that you ever bought new clothes&you come back to the problem you first started with. then you go shopping again, and it becomes a vicious cycle of clothes&money -__-
