What we call 'myths' are pre-historic man's attempts to explain the world in terms he could understand. For instance, perhaps an ancient Greek came upon a mastodon tusk. He wouldn't know what a mastodon was, so he made up a story about a giant boar.
Some years ago, a famous philosopher was approached by one of his students. The student commented that our ancestors must have been pretty stupid to think that the sun went around the earth when everyone knows that the earth goes around the sun. The philosopher conceded that the student had a point, but then said: 'I wonder what it would look like if the sun *did* go around the earth.' His point was, of course, that it would look exactly the same, and so our ancestors, who had no access to space flight, had made their deductions based on direct observation. It is only as we add to our knowledge that we realize that what we believed was true isn't necessarily so.

A Myth is a belief that is held without evidence, because it is not capable of being disputed, argued, proven or disproven. It is a self-evident truth.
This is in contrast to Logos, a belief that can be argued about, proven or disproven. Logos is subject to the laws of evidence.
Myths accepted by one group may be disputed by another, leading to misunderstandings.
