Yes, I think it is very rude and inconsiderate to the other person (people)..that person might feel left out and excluded from the conversation..inside jokes should just be said and mentioned between the two people or persons involved in the inside joke...that's why it is called an "inside" joke. Then again that's just my opinion...but I know that when I am with a couple of other people and they joke with each other about something I don't get in my presence (not anything about me) like say a cartoon or phrase or something, I feel very left out and like I should just leave...and I noticed when I have done that with a friend and some other friend is around, that person gets really quiet and I can tell they feel left out...

An inside joke should be so subtle that a third party will have no clue, and maybe should not even notice . . . No, it's not rude, it's the nature of an "inside joke" to be told among the clueless.

I think it is very rude. No one likes to be excluded and that is what is happening. The clueless person will certainly feel left out. The same thing happens when others converse in another language when they know they will not be understood by all in the group.
Just ask yourself, how would I feel if it were me that was clueless? I was taught to just observe the golden rule..."do unto others as you would have them do unto you " if ever you are in doubt about what is the best action to take.

Absolutely not. If a situation arises where the inside joke would be appropriate or make sense, it's perfectly acceptable to use it. If the other person(s) aren't aware of the circumstances behind the joke, it's not your fault.

I think so... any exclusion is bad.

How would you feel if the two other people were talking about something then all of a sudden started laughing? If you turn around and say what, even if they tell you, it's an inside thing and you're not in, it won't have any meaning for you.

if there weren't people who are clueless to the joke, how would it be an inside joke?

No. It make it seem like the joke is about them.
