People think I get my nails done, but I don't. I've been doing them myself for more years then I'll admit to- and I have some tricks!
Be sure to buff nails smooth and have absolutely no lotion on nails.
Quick drying nail polish-2 coats even if bottle says 1(I have actually had better results NOT using a base coat).
Also polish over the edge and under the nails for added strength and so polish wont be "see through" on tips of nails.
Use a quick dry top coat -my favorite is Sally Hansen Mega Shine extended wear.
Then every other day or so "retouch" the tips of nails w/color and put a new coat of top coat on entire nail and under tip.
This should keep manicure looking fresh for at least a week and by then its time for a color change anyway.

You will find that you get what you pay for, usually. So the more expensive brands last longer. Top coat is important but so is a clear coat under the colour. I don't usually wear nail polish on my fingers anymore because it is a hassle to keep it up, but when I do I find that if you touch up a chip and then apply another top coat you can get a few more days out of it.

I have the same problem with polish chipping.. I chew my fingernails until there's nothing left. I've found that any polish will work just fine, as long as you coat it with a GEL top coat. Clear coat polish just won't cut it.. that chips off, too. Gel hardens nicely on the nails, and it has good 'staying power'. Sally Hansen carries a pretty decent (read: cheap) line of gel wraps, and most drug stores / wal-marts carry that brand.
Other than that, I usually just fork over the $30 for a set of acrylic nails.

Try soaking your hands in soapy water or after a bath is good. After that, trim and file your nails. Buff your cuticles and push them back. Then apply your base coat. Let it dry. ply two coats of the color you want to use. Wait 5 to 10 minutes or maybe a little more for that to try. Then put on your top coat and let it dry.
That is a good way to keep your color on, but if you're just looking, try Sally Hansen, it's great.

It may not be only the nail polish, but the nails. I would invest in a nail buffer (those stands in the mall). Once buffed, polish adheres much better to nails.
Also, letting the polish dry longer under a professional dryer keeps the polish on. I've had insane results from staing under the dryer for over 40 minutes.
Pesonaly I use New York Color (NYC) and it works quite well. The salon has these brand-less bottles that work even better. They're square. You can probably buy one from them.

Yea O.P.I is the best, but you can only find it in salons and stuff and its $7 a bottle. But it definetely stays on. Top it off with Sally Hansen's Hard As Nails clear coat.

I would say Revlon. They have a top and base coat in one. try that before applying your colour. They also have a range that has no bubbles, brush marks etc.Its quick drying. Then apply the top coat. It lasted me minimum - a week. I think that should suffice right? After a week you would probably want to change the colour anyway :p
