The noise also makes the floorboard vibrate, and you can feel it when it happens under the brake pedal. It only happens when I make a sharp left turn, and happens both when initially turning the wheel to the left as well as when I turn it back to the neutral position. The car hasn't hit/ran into anything recently either.

Get that pile of rust to a garage fast. It is very possible it is suffering from LFDE & RS (Lousy Ford Disign Engineering & Recall Syndrome) Also known as a faulty ball joint. If it hasn't already been fixed, the ball joints wear out prematurely and the front wheels fall off the car. If this is the case it would be a very bad thing to happen as you drive down the road at 65 mph.
If it has been fixed, you still need to get it to a Ford garage (or a mechanic that understands Ford junks) and have it checked out.

look under your vehicle inside your front tires. there are axles attached to the wheels and four accordian rubber boots(2 per axle) if you find one ripped you found the damaged cv joint. it will usually be the outer(closest to the wheel).
even if you don't find the bad cv joint have it inspected (maybe for free at any brakes shop) they tell you for sure.

take it to a trust worthy mechanic and ask him to test drive the car or go for a ride with you so he can hear the noise.but it sounds like it is a bad CV joint .if it is have them check the other side also because if one is bad the other side isn't far behind going bad.

Sounds like a bad constant velocity joint. Get it fixed or it will strand you somewhere - and cost you towing on top of the repair bill.
